Design Choices That Keep Us Under One Kilo

There’s a quiet discipline in building something that weighs less than a bag of sugar yet hauls birds, water and steel through miles of brush without complaint. Under one kilo is not a marketing trick. It’s a constraint. And constraints sharpen design like a whetstone on steel.

At Kilo Upland, strength is mandatory. Bulk is optional.


Size: Start Smaller Than You Think You Need

Our primary design philosophy is streamlined gear built for dense, unruly grouse cover. Aspen thickets that grab at straps. Alder runs that try to keep a souvenir. Cattail sloughs that lean in close.

That reality pushes us toward a slightly smaller starting footprint.

Take the Langhaar Strap Vest. It’s sized to be no wider than your torso. In thick cover, you shouldn’t need to think about your dimensions. You already know how wide you are. Your rig shouldn’t suddenly announce that you’ve added six inches of nylon on either side just as you’re stepping toward a dog on point.

Depth follows the same logic. The Langhaar is built to carry a three-rooster limit plus a hun or two. That’s real-world capacity without turning the vest into a sail. Enough volume to do the job. Nothing more, nothing less.


Materials: Every Fabric Has a Purpose

Fabric selection is where ounces quietly multiply.

We build primarily with 500D nylon. It’s a workhorse. Strong enough for daily abuse. Light enough to stay honest.

1000D nylon gets called up only when lighter fabrics aren’t up to snuff. In practice, that means areas where MOLLE lives or where high weight meets low surface area. High PSI zones. High wear. High consequence.

You’ll find 1000D almost exclusively in those areas. They’ve earned the right to run up the scale.

 

 

 

On our belt, where MOLLE attachments connect and the lion’s share of the load transfers, we step beyond traditional textiles. We use Tegris Thermoplastic Composite as a stiffener. It’s a laminated woven composite that delivers rigidity without dragging along unnecessary weight. The fibers lock together similar to carbon fiber, but with more flexibility- and it can be sewn. The result is a belt that carries weight without becoming it.

Our early belts were straight (think standard leather belt off the rack). But wear a leather belt for a year and look at it on the table. It curves to you. It remembers your hips.

With Tegris, we had to give it that memory from the start. So we built the curve in. Pre-shaped. Purposeful. A belt that fits before it’s earned the miles.


Minimalism: Saying No Is a Design Skill

Adding features is tempting. There are countless opportunities to slap a pocket somewhere on a vest or add a zipper because, well, you could. By and large, we choose to quell those temptations unless the feature solves a real problem.

Minimalism isn’t fragility. It’s focus.

Not everything needs to be overbuilt. Strength and durability are paramount in an upland rig, but “bombproof” can become a trap. Extra layers. Extra tape. Extra stitching. Each one feels safe, but each one adds weight.

We generally start with the minimum but necessary concept, then run prototypes hard. Miles in the field. Cold mornings. Wet grass. Loaded bags. We’re looking for any sign of failure: fray, distortion, fatigue. If something gives, we reinforce it with intent, not anxiety.


Heat-Bound Seams: Function Over Form

All of our seams are sewn with heavy-duty, Tex-70 nylon thread. That’s non-negotiable. But not all seams are wrapped in grosgrain or binding tape.

On the interior of the Langhaar game bag, seams are heat-bound rather than taped. Binding tape is aesthetic and structural. It looks clean. It feels finished. But inside the bag, aesthetics take a back seat.

We found that heat-sealed edges provide more than adequate structural integrity without adding extra layers of material. The interior doesn’t need decoration. It needs durability. So we chose function over form and left the ounces on the cutting room floor.


A Case Study in Load Distribution

Early Langhaar prototypes were completely slick. No built-in storage. Just a game bag and structure. This worked until mid-to-late November. Layers come on. Layers come off. Gloves get stashed. A hat disappears and reappears with the sun.

We experimented with adding a zippered pocket to the outermost bag upright. On paper, it made sense. In practice, when loaded, it shifted weight farther from the body’s center of mass. The vest felt subtly different. Not heavier, just… farther away.

That wasn’t the answer.

We moved the zippered pocket to the innermost bag upright, closer to the body and closer to the centerline. The result was better load distribution and less perceived weight. Same capacity. Smarter placement.


Add the Features. Subtract the Noise.

When you add up all the design choices, the philosophy becomes clear.

Keep the footprint tight.

Use heavier fabrics only where they’ve earned their keep.

Resist the urge to overbuild.

Test until something fails, then fix that specific thing.

Put weight close to the body.

Strip everything else.

The end result is a workhorse rig that stays under one kilo without feeling delicate. It isn’t bloated with unnecessary features or ornamental flair. It’s built for alder runs, aspen stands, cattail sloughs, and long walks back to the truck with birds in the bag.

Simply put, it does its job.
